Year 5
Welcome to Year 5! We are looking forward to working together with you to help your child shine their light, be the best that they can be and instil in them the school values of love, respect, trust, hope and thankfulness.
Adults in Y5
Mrs Simm teaches the children every morning and Monday and Tuesday afternoon, Mrs Horrocks teaches Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon and she becomes our fantastic Teaching Assistant two mornings a week. This year we are lucky to have Mrs Billington supporting us every morning too.
The Shine Curriculum
Children begin learning at 8:55am every day so please ensure your child arrives promptly to school.
The children will continue with their Spanish learning for one lesson on a Monday and as they are now in year five, their music sessions involve learning a brass instrument and this lesson is led by a teacher called Mr Hobson from Bolton Music Service.
Home learning
Maths homework will be given out and expected in every Friday. The children will be given a printed maths book from CGP and a plastic wallet to keep it in. If your child finds the homework difficult or struggles on a question, we are more than happy to support them and go through it with them as we appreciate this can sometimes cause battles at home. I will be encouraging the children to do their homework the weekend as they receive it so they can discuss any problems with us before the due date on Friday.
It is vitally important that all children read as often as possible – ideally for 20 minutes independently every day, but they also benefit from listening to good readers and discussing characters, plots and what they think might happen next. In year 5 I have allowed the children to choose their own reading book for the moment and this will be monitored carefully to ensure they are reading and also so we can suggest books each individual child might enjoy. Each child has a new reading record book and I have asked them to record all their reading in this. The staff in year 5 will check these weekly.
Best Seats
Your child may have mentioned a daily reward system that we run in year five, it is called, ‘Best seats in the house.’ Two children are chosen every day who have shined throughout the day. They may have produced some excellent work, been kind to others or just been super for the whole day. These children are allowed to sit on a cushion and we will provide some cordial for their water bottle for the day – this is proving to be super exciting at the moment.
Classroom practices
We encourage the children to bring in a water bottle every day. We would kindly ask that it is one with a sports cap. The children should also bring their reading books and reading records into school every day. We also ask that the children bring their iPads fully charged to school each day as we use them regularly and we do not have the capacity to charge them all in school. Please ensure that all PE kits, coats, jumpers etc are named – especially jumpers and coats which they might remove throughout the day.
