Year 6
Welcome to Year 6! We are looking forward to working together with you to help your child shine their light, be the best that they can be and instil in them the school values of love, respect, trust, hope and thankfulness. Whilst we do spend some time preparing for the SATs in May, we do have a lot of exciting opportunities to look forward to such as Young Voices, a World War I Day, Bike Ability, Swimming and the PGL Residential. We will hold a meeting later this term to tell you everything you need to know about the SATS in May, so please don’t worry, we will answer all your questions then! Children may naturally feel nervous about the SATs but we will prepare them well and give them all the support they need before they sit them.
Adults in Y6
Miss Slater will teach the children on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings and Miss Steele will teach the children on Wednesday afternoons, Thursdays and Fridays. Mrs Inman will teach Spanish on Monday and Mrs Silvester is the Year 6 Teaching Assistant. Please feel free to speak to any of these adults about your child if there is something we need to know.
The Shine Curriculum
Children begin learning at 8:55am every day so please ensure your child arrives promptly to school. Although we do have a focus of Maths and English in the build up to the SATS, we do offer all Y6 children a broad and varied curriculum across the year.
Across the year we will put on booster clubs or offer up a time when children can access extra help and support to prepare them for their SATs. Please do encourage them to take up these opportunities so they make as much progress as possible across the year.
Home learning
Maths homework will be given out and expected in by Miss Slater every Wednesday and English homework will be given out and expected in by Miss Steele every Thursday. Both teachers will email you to inform you of what the children have been set. It is vitally important that Y6 children read as often as possible – ideally for 20 minutes independently every day, but they also benefit from listening to good readers and discussing characters, plots and what they think might happen next. Y6 children are not too old to snuggle up to and read with!
Classroom practices
We encourage the children to bring in a water bottle every day. We would kindly ask that it is one with a sports cap. The children should also bring their reading books and reading records into school every day. We also ask that the children bring their iPads fully charged to school each day as we use them regularly and we do not have the capacity to charge them all in school. Please ensure that all PE kits, coats, jumpers etc are named – especially jumpers and coats which they might remove throughout the day.
