Geography
At St. Peter’s Primary School, children follow a Geography curriculum that enables them to learn about where they live; to learn about their environment and why places have been developed for us to live and survive as people. From EYFS, we begin to look at our homes, our school, the local area, our town, and regional and national areas, and we develop this knowledge so that all children have a real understanding of their immediate locality. We also look at the global perspective and how we can contribute to our future and to a global society. Each class studies an area of the world in more depth and we learn about people, places, culture, climate, charities, jobs, and sustainability. The more the children learn about our planet, the better prepared for the future they will be. Geography is our ‘everyday’ and the children learn to question, enquire, conduct fieldwork, develop map skills and engage with real world issues. Our curriculum is tailored to reflect aspects of the 17 global goals agreed by World Leaders to be achieved by 2030. We also have a strong ‘Woodland Protectors’ eco group that drive forward changes in our school, our local community and inform children and adults about world issues. We work with charities, both local and global, to learn about how we can help others. We learn that we live our whole lives as geographers – from following a route to school, understanding ways to help save the planet, following maps, where we choose to live, what job we do or even planning a holiday! By the end of Y6, all children have a good knowledge and understanding of God’s world and the ways in which they can contribute to a better future for people, living creatures and the environment.
