Admission to Reception Class 2024

If you have not registered your child’s details with a school or the Local Authority for admission to primary school for September 2024/25 please complete the online registration form or contact Pupil Services at 01204 332137/2143.

Transferring between Primary Schools

Bolton Council is responsible for coordinating admissions into all schools for those families resident within the Bolton Metropolitan Borough. This includes

  • Children wishing to change from one school to another school within the borough
  • Children who have arrived in the borough requiring a school place
  • Children wishing to move from an independent school to a school maintained by the Council
  • Children resident in the borough but requiring admission to a school in another borough

If you live in the area of another local authority then you must make an application through the school admission team for that authority

Is there an application form I need to complete?

The application form that the parents/carers will be required to complete when requesting admission to a new school can be found here and the notes of guidance here.

You must ensure your child’s continued attendance at their current school whilst your application is being considered however it is recognised that for families who have moved into Bolton, this may not always be possible. You must in such circumstances inform the headteacher at their previous school of the arrangements you are making.

Please see our most recent admissions policy below to find all the information you need to secure a place for your child at St Peter’s Smithills Dean. If you require any further knowledge or would like to come and have a tour of our school, please get in touch with the school office at 01204 333500 or email the school office at office@spsd.bolton.sch.uk

Deferring entry into Reception class

Although children are entitled to a full-time place in school from the September following their 4th birthday, parents can delay the date their child starts school to later on in the year (but not later than the beginning of the summer term).

This is because children don't need to start full-time education until the first day of the term after they turn 5.

Children that turn 5 between:

  • 1 September and 31 December must be in school from the start of the spring term
  • 1 January and 31 March must be in school from the start of the summer term
  • 1 April and 31 August must be in school from the start of the autumn term

More details can be found here: School Admissions Code

Deferring until the next academic year

Parents with summer-born children still need to apply for a school place as normal – as if their child were going to start age 4 – even if they want to delay their start date until age 5.

They can apply for their child to be placed in:

  • Year 1, with their normal age group – parents must make an in-year application for a place
  • Reception, outside their normal age group – parents need to make a request for this.
