Reception

Welcome to Reception! We are looking forward to working together with you to help your child shine their light, be the best that they can be and instil in them the school values of love, respect, trust, hope and thankfulness. We have a lot of exciting opportunities to look forward to such as a class trip, raising money for Children in Need, Christmas performance and more!

Adults in Reception

Miss Whittingham is the teacher. Miss Rushton is our Teaching Assistant who works every morning and Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Mrs Nealon is also our teaching assistant, who works on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Mrs Gavin is our SMSA and supports the children at lunchtime. Please feel free to speak to any of these adults about your child if there is something we need to know.

The Shine Curriculum

Children begin learning at 8:55am every day so please ensure your child arrives promptly to school.  Within the areas of learning in Reception, we incorporate subjects such as, Literacy, Maths, RE, PE, History, Geography, Science, Music, Art and more. The children will encounter a broad and varied curriculum across the year. Read, Write, Inc is an important part of the school day, as through this scheme, your child will learn phonics in order to speak, read and write.

Home learning

I will give out an ‘activity grid’ each half term with different tasks on linked with the areas of learning. I will ask you and your child to complete a set amount, which will increase as the year goes on. Tapestry is the main place for sharing these tasks. This will be explained more as they are given out. Once your child has a reading book, please read regularly during the week and comment in their reading record. We love reading at St Peter’s, so we encourage you to read to your child at home too, so the children hear expression and also develop a love of reading.

Classroom practices

We encourage the children to bring in a water bottle every day. We would kindly ask that it is one with a sports cap. The children should also bring their reading books and reading records into school every day, once they have them. Please ensure that all PE kits, coats, jumpers etc are named – especially jumpers and coats which they might remove throughout the day.
